Orc Nursery

An unreleased project I had worked on between 2016-2017. The game was supposed to be a micromanagement game for PC and mobile platforms, in which the player was put in charge of an Orc Nursery. The goal of the game was to make sure the young orc cubs learn how to properly behave like a good Orc should without letting them get too violent or too peaceful while keeping track of their health and the funds of the school. The game went unreleased due to lack of funds and time. As a result, it only ever made it to early prototype stage.

My Role

My role on the project was primarily as a UI and systems programmer. Most of my time on the project was spent working on the stats, time, and gold systems setting up the layout for the UI. I also coded each of the rooms to alter stat changes differently from each other giving each room a primary function. For example the barracks increased the orcs' energy but still decreased the Orcs other stats as normal. I also programmed the clock and time system allowing days to pass and a day-night cycle to exist in game. This helped us design several systems within the game to keep it fun and engaging for the player, as well as creating a loss condition for them.

My other role was as a systems designer. While I was not the lead I was the one who had implemented and designed the gold system. The way the player would maintain the gold in the game would be that at the end of every 30 day period the game will check how many Orcs are healthy. Depending on the number of Orcs that were healthy the player would get a set amount of gold. If they let any Orcs' health reach zero they would be fined for their negligence. This system not only gave the player incentive for maintaining the Orcs health but is was eventually going to allow them to upgrade their campus to add in new Orc children and buildings with helpful effects. Examples of those buildings were a, Witch Doctor's hut that could heal the Orcs fully at the cost of them becoming either more violent or more peaceful, A Playground which will maintain the Orcs health at the cost of their energy, and a training facility that would increase their violent behavior if they get too peaceful but would decrease their energy and hunger quicker. This whole system was put in place for balance and allowed the player to have a goal to strive for
